Chapter Lantern / Reading journals

A small starting guide

A simple session for exploring chapter summaries and clear personal responses, with room for your own observations.

A modest beginning

Keep a notebook and a bookmark nearby and begin with chapter notes. Choose a small question about chapter summaries and clear personal responses rather than trying to cover the whole subject at once.

Begin with a question that fits the book or essay in front of you. Write the title, author and page reference in your own notebook. Record a brief paraphrase rather than copying long passages. A useful reading note preserves the connection between a specific place in the text and the thought it prompted.

A five-step session

Use this temporary checklist during one session. It clears when the page is reloaded.

Make the note your own

Separate summary from response. One sentence can describe what the passage does; another can explain what you found interesting or unresolved. Revisit the note after reading further and allow the interpretation to change. These exercises use your own reading material and do not assume that a single interpretation is the correct one.

Choose a first page

A chapter opening gives you a concrete exercise. You can also browse the whole journal and begin with the subject closest to hand.
